Uncertainty is not a valid reason for not starting

Ok, I know I shouldn’t use double negatives, but trying to put it in a different way kept bringing me back to this.

What holds us back from starting something, is the uncertainty about being able to finish it with satisfactory results. We may be uncertain about our abilities, our resources (time, money, people) or anything else that might be interfering.

As long as the uncertainty is there, it will be scary to start. But I strongly believe that: you won’t know until you try. Face it, most things that require effort will have some uncertainty about them. You’re trying something new, you’re working for a new client, you have to meet quality standards: uncertainty is there.

If you find yourself postponing, ask yourself: is it because of uncertainty? If it is, then start! Either start by dealing with the uncertainty now, as part of the project, or start the project as if you are certain and deal with the uncertainty later. Either way, put the uncertainty on hold. Write down what you’re uncertain about and store it away for later. And start. Now!
