If you decrease bureaucracy, don’t sacrifice predictability

Bureaucracy has a bad rap. The word is mostly used to describe an administrative process that is unnecessarily slow and complex. While that is often the case, bureaucracy was actually invented in the best interest of the client, to make sure that a process was predictable and rightful for each and every client. 

Now I am always for making things simpler and faster, but I feel you should never sacrifice predictability. You can replace the predictability of a fixed process with better and more timely progress information in a flexible process. Just as long as the client knows what to expect at any time in the process.

I myself was burned yesterday by a postal worker not following procedure and in the process she left me without information of where my expensive package is. So now I feel what it’s like to lose predictability. I wish she had followed the slow, complex but oh so predictable procedure. Instead she chose to be flexible and ended up leaving me clueless.
